• Traditional starches are rice, taro, yams and breadfruit.
• Ancient Chamorros grew rice
• Rice was used as a trade item between villages
• Rice is considered one of the most important food staples.

Ancient Chamorro Food

o In the Chamorro language, there are different words related to rice
 1.  fa’i (rice growing in the field)
 2. fama ayan (rice field)
 3. timulo (harvested rice stalk piles)
4.  cha’guan aga’ga (jungle rice)
5. tinitu (husked rice)
6.   pugas (uncooked rice)
7.  hineksa’ (boiled or cooked rice)
8.  alaguan (rice soup or rice drink)
